Cool Weather Strong Roots: Fall’s Secret Planting Power

Why Fall Is the Best Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs

When you think of planting season, spring often comes to mind—but did you know that fall is actually one of the best times to plant trees and shrubs? In fact, planting in autumn sets your landscape up for stronger, healthier growth in the years ahead.

Cooler Temperatures, Happier Plants

Fall’s cooler air temperatures and warm soil create the perfect environment for root development. Plants aren’t stressed by scorching summer sun, and they can focus their energy on establishing roots instead of putting out new leaves or flowers.

Less Stress for You (and the Plants)

Watering is easier in fall. With more rainfall and lower evaporation rates, your new trees and shrubs will need less supplemental watering compared to a hot summer planting. That means less work for you and less stress on your plants.

Stronger Roots Before Winter

By planting in fall, trees and shrubs get several weeks—or even months—of root growth before the ground freezes. When spring arrives, they’ll already be established underground and ready to push out fresh, vigorous top growth.

Wider Selection and Sales

Fall is also a great time to shop! Many nurseries (like ours here in Russellville) bring in a wide selection of hardy trees and shrubs for fall planting. You may even find seasonal discounts, making it the perfect time to invest in your landscape.

What to Plant in Fall

Most deciduous trees and hardy shrubs thrive when planted in autumn. Some great options include:

  • Shade trees like oaks, maples, and elms

  • Flowering shrubs such as hydrangeas, spireas, and viburnums

  • Evergreens like hollies, arborvitae, and junipers

Planting Tips for Success

  • Dig wide, not deep. A hole two to three times the width of the root ball encourages outward root growth.

  • Don’t bury the crown. Make sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface.

  • Water deeply. Give new plantings a thorough soak to settle the soil around the roots.

  • Mulch wisely. Apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch, keeping it away from the trunk, to hold in moisture and insulate roots.

The Payoff Next Spring

By planting in fall, you’re giving your trees and shrubs a head start. When spring rolls around, they’ll already be rooted and ready to thrive—rewarding you with faster growth, healthier foliage, and stronger resilience against summer stress.
